Our story

Hi, we're the Z family.

Hello, I’m Eric. I have to tell you, it was such a strange turn of events that moved us to transition from a city lifestyle to placing ourselves in the middle of the countryside with only one neighbor and some cows to look at. However, through all the changes we are so blessed to be here.

I am a dad, a follower of Christ, an architect, entrepreneur, avid gardener, homeschool teacher, jack of all trades, and continual student. My wife works in the medical profession and we have two lovely daughters who love the outdoors. Our homestead is our classroom and a peaceful refuge.

What is this homesteading thing?

I barely knew what homesteading was until a few short years ago. Apparently I grew up on a homestead between the ages of 10 and 18 but never realized it. I had also not appreciated the life we had when I was young and did everything I could to get out and flee the the city as soon as possible. Eventually, I had made it to a point where I was living in the heart of Washington, DC with no vehicle, taking the bus or subway to work and using my feet for the rest. I though I had it made……lol, nope.

Little did I know those homesteading skills I learned in my youth would be invaluable later down the road. I have always had a self-sufficient mindset but it was not until a about three years ago in studying God’s Word, observing the political landscape, and surveying global economic tides that our family decided to leave our careers and “retire” to a quiet place where we could raise food for our family, de-stress, and create our own self-sufficient lifestyle.

creating a new lifestyle was necessary

Aside from the other reasons we mentioned above, we felt deep down that we were missing our children grow up. We both had budding careers and were “moving up” the ladder but we were paying for somebody else to raise our child, clean our house, and mow our lawn. Why? What is the point? It was much more important for us to forgo financial and career gains for family and freedom.
